In S1E16, Lorelai is helping Rory get ready for her fancy 3-month anniversary date with Dean. Rory tells her that Dean is taking her to Andeloro’s, and Lorelai begins her rant.
She says, “Oh! Well, isn’t that romantic? Wow, it’s gonna be just like ‘Lady and the Tramp.’ You’ll share a plate of spaghetti, but it’ll just be one long strand, but you won’t realize it until you accidentally meet in the middle, and then he’ll push a meatball towards you with his nose, and you’ll push it back with your nose, and then you’ll bring the meatball home and you’ll save it in the refrigerator for years and…”
FINALLY, Rory interrupts her.
Lady and the Tramp is a 1955 animated film by Disney. It’s about two dogs, one from a well-to-do home, the other a stray, who fall in love. It’s all very adorable. The restaurant scene in which the dogs share a plate of spaghetti, set to the tune of “Bella Notte,” has become something of a cultural icon, frequently referenced and parodied. (Note: it was not just one long strand of spaghetti.)
