  1. You missed the reference in Episode 1 to “The best laid plans…” 😉

    • To a Mouse, on Turning Her Up in Her Nest with the Plough (Tae a Mouse): 1785 poem by Robert Burns. According to legend, Burns was ploughing a field when he accidentally destroyed a mouse’s nest, which it needed to survive the winter. Burns’s borther claimed he composed the poem while still holding his plough. The famous line is often paraphrased in English as, “The best-laid plans of mice and men / Go oft awry.”

    Burns’s original:
But Mousie, thou art no thy lane,

In proving foresight may be vain:

The best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men

    Gang aft agley,

An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain,

    For promis’d joy!

    In modern English:
But little Mouse, you are not alone,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes of mice and men
    Go often askew,
And leave us nothing but grief and pain,
    For promised joy!
